Why Club Connect Matters
The research is consistent and clear: If by third grade children are not reading at grade level, they will fall behind in school and become discouraged, which leads to middle school absenteeism and increased high school dropout rates.
Currently, nearly 60% of all fourth graders in the U.S. are not reading proficiently. High school dropouts cost the nation over $300 billion in lost income each year while students who graduate from high school will earn an average of $1.3 million over the course of their lifetime.
Books Boost Learning.
In Fort Worth, TX the first year of Club Connect means books for 6,576 students in 10 schools. But it also means online resources, with the ability for schools to implement volunteer tutor and mentor programs. Parents read with their kids after school, and come to the Reading Oasis for parent events like Dads & Donuts, which helps engage fathers in their kids’ school.
Educators say Club Connect is helping kids learn. “Here we have a partnership that’s bringing something to our school that actually parallels the work that we’re doing every single day in academics,” says Area Superintendent Christi Buell. “We’ll really have synergy and move our work forward. I don’t think you can have a better partnership than when that happens.”
Businessman Kort Peters, an investor in Club Connect, put it this way: “We’re doing this because it’s the right thing to do – and it’s what we can do.”
